29 Palms - MOS for Ground Electronic Maintenance |
Lead | |
|
Hi, I just found out this morning that my grandson is going to 29 Palms on Tuesday, after graduation from MCT, for Ground Electronics Maintenance. Does anyone know what the number for that school is? Do any of you have anyone in that same field? I'm curious how long the school will be, he was told originally that his school would be about a year. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Karla, T.J. just arrived on base this morning, as a matter of fact, he called me as they were pulling through the gates of the base to say he had made the flight and bus ride just fine, but was sleepy. It was so good to hear his voice. I'm looking forward to being able to talk to him more often now. We are close, and have always talked alot. I'm not sure what his school number will be, I know it's 2800, and I know he is in electronics, but he said he will get me all of the information as soon as possible so I can send him things. I know the mail goes to the school building he is in and has to have a school number too. This part of his school is 93 days long and goes on from there, depending what school they send him to next.

Hi Cathy,
My son is at 29 Palms for 0614 (Unit Level Circuit Switch Op-Maintainer) and graduates Dec. 6. You should be hearing from your son in the next couple of days with his exact MOS and at that point he will hopefully have the date when his class starts. My son had a three-week wait, which they keep them busy doing odd jobs around the base until they start the class. Sometimes they don't have enough to make up a full class, so that's the delay. Your son will also be able to tell you an address of where he is. At this point, they will put down their "wish" for the PDS. Some companies find out a little sooner where they will be placed. As of now, my son has not found out. However, by the week your son graduates, he will know where he's going after school. :-)

My daughter son in law and granddaughter are moving to 29 Palms in the next 2-3 weeks. They are new Marines and don't have a clue on how to find housing -
where the good places are to live and where to start looking. Can anyone help with advice or experience or any things to do and not to do? Anything would be
appreciated.

My son was at 29 Palms for 8 months. He waited 3 months for his 2844 classes to start up. Sometimes the wait for those classes are very long.
If you want to see the some of the base look at my images. I went out to 29 Palms in February and posted some pics. The first is the road from 29 Palms to the base. The base is actually at the base of the mountains. It is definitely the desert. If anybody gets a chance drive thru the National Park in 29 Palms. It really is quite beautiful. As far as housing they do have on base if your classes are 1 year. Not much in the actual city of 29 Palms. Diane PMM of PFC Curtis

Are they going to try for base housing? (their website: http://www.29palms.usmc.mil/dirs/inl/housing/default.asp ) Because I think that right now the
wait for base housing is not very long.
Off base there are a few apartment complexes and houses for rent. I would try to do a search online and see what you come up with. They could also stay on base at the Sleepy Tortoise (http://www.mccs29palms.com/pages/foodHospitality/lodging.html) and look for a place to rent in person. We got housing on base, so I haven't really looked to see what is in the area. If you (or your daughter) need any more info or anything feel free to send me a message :) |

His recruiter also told him it was electronic maintaince. how long is the school for electronic maintance? and when he signed up for this mos he was told the schooling is like a year long but the recruiter said he would be there only 93 days, so where would he go after 29 palms? any info would be GREATLY appreciated!! The MOS # for Electronic Maintenance is 2800. It works kind of funny... They are all assigned 2800 when they get here, but that is actually jsut the general
field. They ALL take the BEC (basic electronics) , which IS 93 training days. BUT once they complete that class they are assigned to their actual MOS which
could be anything in the 2800 field. They will then take follow on classes to complete their training here. Depending on their MOS and how long the wait is
before they class up again it can be anywhere from a couple more months to about another year.
After 29 Palms he'll receive orders for his Permanent Duty Station which could be pretty much anywhere. If ya have any other questions, don't hesistate to ask and feel free to message me. :) |

Q actually started his class for 2847 on the 15th. I know a couple other guys who finished up BEC with him in August are picking up their classes tomorrow. I
think he just got lucky with the timing of 2847 picking up, he only had to wait about 3 weeks. lol Do you know how much longer Chris is going to be out here? I
know that Q was told his classes should finish up late Jan/ early Feb and he should be getting orders to his PDS around then.
Oh! And I'm going to try and get Q to remember to pick up batteries for my camera so I can get some pictures of them at soccer with the kids. Assuming he remembers, I can e-mail them to you if you want! :) |

Hi Bekens, thank you for the explanation about 2800. The 93 days does not include weekends or holidays, is
that correct? My son just received notice his BEC starts next Thursday, the 13th, so I was trying to do some 'figuring.' I understand that classes
are suspended during the holidays? If you happen to be familiar with the stop/restart date of holiday leave, would you mind sharing?
It's tough being 3k+ miles away and trying to help out an anxious young man -- so far though I have found a TON of info on the MCCS 29 Palms site. Thank you and everyone for your assistance with info!!

The 93 days are training days, so weekends and holidays are not included. My husband still has no clue what is going on with Thanksgiving, but I know that
Christmas, for his Company at least, they have no class from Dec. 19th til Jan. 5th. Those that aren't on leave may still end up having to pull duty at
some point or another during those days off though.
If you have ANY other questions let me know!! :) |
