We flew by US air into Jacksonville;
the Albert J Ellis airport (OAJ abbrev when booking a flight) in Jacksonville is a very small airport close to Camp Geiger. When we booked our flight with US air through an online discount service, we paid a small fee for "change of date" insurance, which I suggest doing since there is a chance your Marine's grad date may be changed. It will allow you to switch your flight date without a high penalty. As always, US Air provided us with great service! There is a car rental company (Alamo) at the OAJ airport, which we used and had a positive experience; reasonable rate and no problems. Just be sure to "speak up" and ask about the size of the car when they're assigning; we simply upgraded for a few bucks more for a med sized vs a very small compact car. We did this for both comfort and safety reasons. If you're flying, a car rental makes getting around easier. I suppose there are shuttles/cabs, but we didn't see any. By the way, I highly recommend booking a flight which would get you there the Sunday before Tuesday graduation at the latest. That way, if you have a delay, you won't miss any of the precious liberty time with your Marine on Monday afternoon/evening! In our case, liberty time with our son was from about 4:20PM - 7:15PM - Monday; (I'll add more info about liberty visit in another post)
Lodging: Though we found a package deal online, (one price for flights & room) we ended up going to a different Hotel, the Marriot Towne Place (great!) - as we didn't care for the other place that was booked for us in the package. (There is a reason for the low-low price!) We paid out of pocket for the Marriot, but it was well worth it, especially since there was not much to do nearby, during wait time to see our Marine. That is, unless you want to shop - which we did not, since we didn't want to have a lot of extra stuff on our flight home. The Marriott Towne Place has 1 & 2 bedroom suites, where you have a livingroom & full and fully equipped kitchen. (So you can save a little money in return by preparing your own meals.) They also offer free breakfast in the lobby. The suites are very comfortable settings to relax between visits to the base. I'm pretty sure the sofa in the livingroom pulled out to a bed, if you need extra sleeping space. For those going to a summer graduation, this Hotel has a nice outdoor pool area. It was quite chilly at times when we were there; glad we had warm clothing!
Dining: We mostly prepared simple meals in our suite, but did eat at the Olive Garden one evening, which is just up the road from the Hotel; great food & service as you might expect. It was nice to be able to take our leftovers back to the room since we had a refrigerator/full-size microwave/stove w/oven, dishes, dishwasher etc. Otherwise, there are plenty of BBQ & Steak House places around, as well as a Ruby Tuesday's nearby.
As for any last minute items: there is a Target, Walmart, & Marshall's on the same road as the Marriott, plus a bunch of other stores.
